Sometimes the simplest solutions to complex problems lie in plain sight. For her master’s thesis at the University of Arts, Berlin, designer Jonna Breitenhuber developed a sustainable packaging solution that is as visually compelling as the most well-designed plastic bottles. The premise of her thesis: What if bottles were made of soap?

The result was Soapbottle. The zero-waste packaging created from soap can accommodate any liquid personal care product on the market. As the product inside is used, the Soapbottle gradually dissolves. When the product is finished, what’s left of the bottle can be used as hand soap or turned into detergent.

Breitenhuber designed into the potential problem of using soap as a container, incorporating a ribbon or strap to the bottle making is easier to handle when it gets wet. “These supposed disadvantages are used as design elements,” Breitenhuber explained to Fast Company. “The concept plays with the process of dissolution, with the transformation of the object and the individuality resulting from these aspects.”
